2022 Festival: Concerto Class First Round

The first round of the 2022 Concerto Class was held on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 January at St Cuthbert's church on Lothian road. After two full days of wonderful concerto performances our adjudicators, Liz Childs and Roy Howat, took some time to decide - a compliment, they said, to all the performers.

The four Finalists, in order of performance, are: Ethan Loch (piano), Sofia Ros (accordion), Shakira Segalla-Humbert (cello) and Chun-Yi Kang (violin).

Two performers were Highly Commended: Rhea Fitzgerald (piano) and Jess McFarlane (trumpet).

Two are considered Runners-up: Ian Teh (piano) and Robert Johnson (horn).

The four winners of this first round will play again at The Queen's Hall on Sunday 13 March with the Friends of the Festival orchestra. Many, many congratulations to all performers and thank you to our diligent and enthusiastic adjudicators.

The main 2022 Festival will be held from 1 to 13 March, 2022.

The Concerto Final and Highlights Concert will be held on Sunday 13 March, 2022.

The Edinburgh Music Competition Festival is a friendly and supportive festival where amateur musicians of all ages can take to the stage  alongside performers of a similar ability.

Our programme of competitive and non-competitive classes positively encourages musicians of all abilities to take part. We offer more than 100 classes for classical and traditional instruments or combinations of instruments and singers, choirs, orchestras and bands.

The Syllabus document is at the heart of the Festival. It provides a list of all the classes we offer, as well as regulations, adjudicator biographies, previous winners and much more. It is available online below for reference:

For 2022 we have introduced three new non-competitive classes - a jazz workshop led by Richard Michael for soloists or ensembles;  a class for adult beginner pianists;  and for children who are shy about performing alone - "Sing with a friend" - for ages 11 to 12 and 10 and under.
